Weekend in brief: Smith completes terriffic treble

LONG distance swimmer Anthony Smith completed a remarkable hat-trick on Saturday, when he competed a Jersey to France swim in ten hours.
Smith, who set off for France from La Coupe Point at 8.33 am, had already had a cross Channel (2005) and round Jersey (last month) successes on his sporting CV.
Despite a tough finish, after being accompanied by dophins for the first half of the swim, his efforts brought about a successful conclusion to the Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club’s last major swim of the year.
MOTOR RACING – Disappointment for Walker: James Walker could not build on his recent Silverstone victory at Magny Cours over the weekend, failing to finish the first race after coming off the track in monsoon-like rain.
He had qualified eighth in his group to gain himself 16th place on the grid for race one, but in race two had to settle for 23rd on the grid, eventually finishing 18th.
SURFING – CI championships extended: Over 60 competitors took part in Deloitte Channel Islands Surfing Championships, although the big events, the Open and Senior men’s categories, will not take place until tomorrow evening at 6 pm.
Surf was excellent at the Watersplash on Saturday with a nice 2-3ft swell running, but this dropped off yesterday.

GOLF – Morgan the Bogey king: Steve Morgan, a 21, handicapper, came out top of the card at Les Mielles GC’s Bogey Cup competition on Saturday, finishing with 11 points.
Chris Rayner (9 h’cap) and John Eddy (15 h’cap) followed behind, both scoring seven.
Dynamic Damon: Eight, handicapper Damon O’Driscoll won the Samarés Golf Society’s Voisins Memorial Trophy at Les Mielles GC yesterday, a Stableford off three, quarter handicap, with 37 points played of 3/4 handicap at Les Mielles yesterday.
Simon lifts Captain’s Medal: Steve Simon won the Jersey Western GC’s Captain’s Medal at La Moye yesterday morning, reducing his handicap of 5 by two strokes with an excellent nett 67.
André Bell was runner-up with a gross 82, nett 70.
Happy Hanley: Twenty-two handicapper Martin Hanley won La Moye Golf Club’s Tuesday Evening League final on Saturday.
At the Club’s course at St Brelade, Hanley won on a countback against La Moye Captain John Collins after both players returned 39 Stableford points.
O’Neill to the fore: Gavin O’Neill won the Royal Jersey Golf Club’s Club Championship yesterday.
O’Neill returned sub-par rounds of 67 and 69 to win by seven strokes from Paul Le Chevalier.
PETANQUE – Jacob top of the ladder: Jacob Romeril topped the sixth and final round the junior championships at Carrefour PC yesterday to claim the overall under, 16 title.
The overall winner of the under, 11 championship was James Lawrence.
JPC regain Birch-Caberet: Jersey PC overcame a two-game deficit from the first leg to beat Carrefour PC 34-26 at Les Quennevais yesterday and so regain the Birch-Caberet Trophy.
Trailing 31-29, the second round was played between 15 teams from each club, in mixed weather.
Jersey scraped ahead 8-7 in the first session, but fell further behind overall when losing the second 10-5.
Six games down, Jersey needed a superb effort and they got that in the third with a 12-3 result, putting them three ahead.
A fourth and final session had Jersey building on that lead, winning it 9-6, giving them a 34-26 victory on the day and an overall two-leg success of 63-67.
Jersey club captain Lawrence Rondel picked up the trophy.
SHOOTING – Dave Drummond Memorial: Ashley Le Sech was high gun and AA Class winner in Lecq Clay Target Club’s 100 Bird Sporting Shoot for the Dave Drummond Memorial Trophy yesterday with a magnificent 91.
Hilary Drummond has donated the trophy in memory of her husband who died earlier this year.
Yesterday’s Crabbe Clay Pigeon Club’s 50-bird sporting competition resulted in a high gun win for Alex Shakeshaft with 40 ex 50.
Other results were: A Class : Keith Pike 39; B: Howard Durell 31; C: Sid Clements 33.
Veteran: John Bedford 37.
MOTORSPORT – Classic winners: Paul Baudains was the A Route winner in the Jersey Classic & Modern Trials Club’s trial held yesterday at Egypt in Trinity.
Other class winners were Graham du Feu (Pre 65 Premier), Vince Lee-Baker (Twin Shock Premier), John Renouf (B Route), Ashley Noke (C Route), Andy Jeanne (Twin Shock), Matthew Harrison (Junior A), Amelia Jeanne (Junior B) and Robert Pallot (Junior Small Wheel).
MOTORCROSS – Pearce puts on A1 show: Brett Pearce took the A1 Precast Ltd trophy of the day in the penultimate Jersey Motor Cycle and Light Car Club motocross event held at Sorel Point yesterday Second place in the big wheel 85 cc class went to Ben Le Cornu while Kieran Gregory took third overall.
HOCKEY – Yesterday’s results: Investec ladies hockey results from the weekend were – Ladies Division I: Quackers 1sts 2, Nomads 1sts 0.
Development Division: Jersey Ladies 2nds 5, Quackers E&Y Dabblers 1; Eagles Juniors 6, Crusaders Juniors 4.
BOWLS – Harrington Trophy: The results of St Brelade BC’s final competition of the year, for the Harrington Trophy, were: Winners: David Le Boutillier (skip), Ken Gunton, Les Sutcliffe, Olive Gratton.
Runners up: Terry Allen (skip), Cliff Petit, Denis Megaw, Peter Robinson.
Winner of the touchers competition was Frank Guillaume, with the runner up being Dorothy Le Riche.
CROQUET – Triumphant Tony: Jerseyman Tony Le Moignan had a successful debut playing for Great Britain in Dublin this weekend, helping them to a 12.5-2.5 win over Ireland.
Le Moignan and doubles partner, Keith Aiton, won their match 2-0, with triple peels from both players, against Ireland’s Simon Williams and Gerard Healy.
GB advanced to a 7-2 lead, winning five of the six games on Saturday, Le Moignan beating Patsy Fitzgerald 2-1.
Yesterday the GB team played their opposite rank numbers in the final session.
Le Moignan played ex-President champion, Ed Cunningham, and drew 1-1 in the longest match of the weekend.
As GB had an unassailable 12-2 lead, it was decided not to play the third game.
TENNIS – Inter-insular win: Jersey’s over-55s regained the Sneed Trophy against Guernsey yesterday at the Caesarean Club in Grands Vaux.
The hosts won by 15 rubbers to nine.
ATHLETICS – Brown in the pink: Island Games athlete Tom Brown won the HSBC Private Bank Jersey Spartan Autumn 10K yesterday, finishing at the FB Fields in 35 min 16 sec.
Dave Ibbotson followed the teenager home in 35.53, with Jo Gorrod the first lady to finish in 36.53.
CROQUET – Euro crown decided in Jersey: David Openshaw beat fellow English player Stephen Mullinerin 2-1 in a closely contested European Championship final at Les Quennevais yesterday to lift the title for the first time.
The winner of the plate event was Sweden’s Simon Carlsson who beat Jersey’s Martin Hodge.
