Parents are ordered to pay court for their children’s offending

Tuesday 25th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.

FOR the first time in Jersey, parents have been forced to pay money to a court for their teenage sons’ bad behaviour.

Yesterday the parents of two 17-year-olds were ordered to pay a total of £1,500 ‘security money’ to try to ensure that their children do not reoffend. If they get into trouble before their 18th birthdays the parents will lose the money. It is believed to be the first time that the provision under the Criminal Justice, Young Offenders (Jersey) Law has been enforced by the Royal Court. The two 17-year-olds, who may not be named for legal reasons, were sentenced to 330 hours’ community service between them on 7 September for their involvement in a violent assault on a man at Snow Hill on 15 December last year.
