Deputy fails in move for ombudsman
Wednesday 26th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.
AN attempt to set up a financial ombudsman in Jersey has been rejected by the States.
Deputy Alan Breckon failed yesterday for a second time to convince fellow Members that enough law-drafting time could be found to create the role of an ombudsman in the Island. If the proposal had been passed, Islanders could have had a free and impartial appeal service relating to bank and insurance company decisions. States Members voted 27-13 against the Deputy’s amendment to the law-drafting section of the business plan, which would have postponed the new Licensing Law in favour of setting up a body to protect consumers from bad business practice.
