SENATOR Stuart Syvret says that Jersey should withdraw its £1m contribution to the UK defence budget.
The former Health Minister said today that in funding the Jersey Field Squadron the Island was morally and ethically compromised because of the UK’s ‘illegal war in Iraq’. Senator Syvret also likened relations between Britain and Jersey to an ‘abusive relationship’ and said that the UK government had treated the Island appallingly over issues of taxation and higher education. He told the States yesterday that he would be bringing a proposition to withdraw funding for Jersey’s Territorial Army unit. His comments came during questions to Home Affairs Minister Wendy Kinnard about the renegotiation of the amount Jersey pays for the squadron.
