£100,000 facelift plan for ‘dingy’ town areas

THERE are plans to give Snow Hill, Colomberie and La Motte Street a £100,000 facelift by the end of this year.

An assembly of 35 St Helier parishioners agreed earlier this week to use £50,000 of ratepayers’ money to improve the ‘dark and dingy’ area. It is hoped this will be matched by another £50,000 from the States’ building reserve or the Waterfront Enterprise Board. Peter Noble, director of technical and environmental services, said that they now had £123,000 in the funds and proposed to spend £25,000 on Colomberie. ‘The lighting in Colomberie precinct is dark and dingy,’ he said. ‘We hope to put in a pattern of pavement lights like the solar-powered lights in West’s Centre and improve the street furniture in the area.’ The £25,000 plans for Snow Hill, include decking which it is hoped will be used by the youths who congregate in the area. Mr Noble said: ‘We would like to put timber decking on the grass triangle area and put plants, bushes and lights to enhance the appearance. We are hopeful that the decked areas will improve the area for the youths and give them somewhere to sit and get away from the bus shelter. We also plan to put up a fence around the toilets to camouflage the JEC sub-station and put portholes into the bus shelter.’
