Rocket man’s nightmare

ROCKET man Terry McDonald’s dream of putting Jersey into the record books has turned into a personal nightmare.

In the face of opposition from environmentalists and the threat of prosecution from the Environment department, Mr McDonald cancelled his bid to simultaneously launch 110,000 rockets as a spectacular finale to the Battle of Flowers. He had already racked up considerable costs in the preparations, but had at least hoped to be able to sell off the rockets, which cost £17,000. However, three potential UK buyers have pulled out and for more than 60 days he has been sleeping with the rockets, which are stored in containers in a secret location. ‘I have to be with them for security reasons. I can’t allow the possibility of them being sabotaged,’ said Mr McDonald. He had planned the event as both a world record attempt and as a fund-raiser for Jersey Side by Side, which is currently building a school in earthquake-hit Pakistan with the International Red Cross.
