Waters plans rugby World Cup review in Jersey

Thursday 27th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.

FORMER Island under-13s rugby player Fraser Waters, since 1998 a Wasps and England player, is bringing five of Europe’s top players to the Island on Thursday, 1 November.

For his benefit dinner at the Royal Yacht Hotel that night he will be joined by current England World Cup players Joe Worsley and Simon Shaw, France’s Raphael Ibanez and, from another generation, current Wasps’ director of Rugby Ian McGeechan and former England player and coach, Roger Uttley.

Despite his current youth Waters (31) has been plagued by injury during his career.

A nagging groin strain and what seemed to be a perpetually injured ankle cut his England appearances to three – the first against the US Eagles in America in June 2001 – but for almost a decade he has been part of a Wasps’ team which currently boasts eight players in England’s World Cup squad, five of who could play for their country against Tonga tomorrow: Josh Lewsey, Paul Sackey, Joe Worsley, Phil Vickery and Lawrence Dallaglio.

And, during that time he has been part of a squad which has won the Heineken Cup in both 2004 and 2007, plus the Guinness Premiership in 2005.
