ST PAUL’S lady footballers came from a goal behind to defeat holders First Tower United 2-1 after extra-time in the Zenith Trust Cup final last night.

At Springfield, the Saints ladies lifted their first piece of silverware ever after goals by Suzanne Rosser and Jo Jones – after Lisa McLaughlin shot Tower ahead.

Saints coach Ken Addison said: ‘We’re delighted.

I think fitness was the difference in the end and that’s reward for the effort put in by the girls early season.

‘Tower deservedly led at the interval, I think we were a little overawed by the occasion and that led to Tower having some excellent possession first half.

‘We made one change at the break enabling us to push Suzanne Rosser forward more.

Defensively we also had to play together more as a unit and we achieved second half.

‘Suzanne Rosser chased a long ball down to equalise and then Jo Jones nodded home Gemma Dunning’s corner kick.’ Tower boss Geoff Vandervliet said: ‘I’m disappointed for our girls, they played well, created a lot but, unfortunately, did not take their chances.

‘It was just one of those nights and full credit to St Paul’s.

President Charlie Browne has done a lot of work for their ladies and I’m delighted that he has now tasted success.

‘St Peter not playing this season has spread several good players across the clubs and I think that can only be good for our game.’ Vandervliet praised Lucinda Overbury and Lara Couvert, two 16-year-olds who performed well last night.
