Jersey hope to squash Games rivals again
Saturday 29th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.
SIX squash players are heading to Guernsey tomorrow with the aim of winning the Alternative Island Games crown.
Jersey dominated when squash was included in the NatWest Island Games in Shetland two years ago, and when the sport was dropped for Rhodes 2007, they jumped at the chance to compete in Guernsey next week.
Bowls, also ommited this summer, also being contested, but Jersey are not sending a team.
Jersey, who returned with medals in five out of the six categories in Shetland, including team gold, will be represented by captain Rob Hickling, Paul Frankland, Kate Cadigan, Ross Cornish, Glyn Moignard and Rowena Hockey.
‘Great opportunity’ Frankland, hoping to repeat the Shetland successes, said: ‘This is a great opportunity to play at a high level and as a team.
Guernsey have done really well to organise the event which is being supported by the inclusion of a number of English and Welsh national players.’ Jersey, who are being supported by the Bedell Group, face Cayman Islands tomorrow, following the opening ceremony.
A team from Wales and hosts Guernsey are the next in line for the team competition.
