Polar Bears seek to snatch RAF swim record

Saturday 29th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.

THE Jersey Polar Bears Group will attempt to break the RAF’s relay record for swimming around Jersey tommorow.

The six-strong team is due to start from Elizabeth Castle Breakwater at around 7.30 am, but although there is no doubt about their quality, it will be the weather that will be deciding factor in what time it takes.

The RAF team’s record is 9 hr 43min 35 sec.

The Polar Bears, who will be swimming for one hour stretches, are: Ian Jones, Bruce Bridal, Richard Flambard, Phil Labey, Anthony Smith and David Le Clercq or Terry Noel.

Organiser Ian Anderson said: ‘We spotted a break in the weather and decided to go for it.

But we’ve been thinking of challenging for the record for some time now.’
