Dicker shoots Jersey through

Monday 1st October 2007, 12:00AM BST.

THE Investec Island men’s hockey side impressed coach Shelagh Herbert as they came from behind to progress to the third round of the English Hockey Cup yesterday, with Mark Dicker claiming four goals in a 6-2 victory over Woking.

Playing at Goldsworth Park, Woking, Jersey took time to settle and were punished after just three minutes as Woking scored from open play.

However, once Jersey settled they played some superb hockey, levelling as Mike James drove down the right, threading the ball through to Mark Dicker who found Peter Millar in the D.

He turned to eliminate the defender and flicked the ball into the net.

‘It was a very good goal,’ added Herbert.

Stuart Ramskill, a replacement to injured Gavin Collins who had been hit in the face, soon earned his side a penalty corner and Dicker forced it into the goal to make it 2-1 after 20 minutes.

Nathan Maguire played well down the right flank, taking the game to the opposition, and helped Jersey to a 3-1 lead after gaining a penalty corner which gave Dicker his second goal of the game.

‘With the Jersey forwards continually rolling, the Woking defence didn’t know what was being thrown at them which helped us,’ said Herbert.

After the break Woking pulled one back following a counter attack but Jersey stepped into gear and Millar propelled Jersey to 4-2 with an open play goal.

Dicker soon secured his hat-trick after Luke Maguire made a fantastic interception as Woking were bringing the ball through their midfield.

The ball went to Tom Millar and then Dicker who battered the ball into the top left of the goal from the top of the D.

Millar then had a great flick over the keeper denied by a Woking defender heading the ball off the line, handing Jersey a penalty stroke which was duly put away by Dicker for a final score of 6-2.

Herbert commended both Garret O’Brien and Jason Webber who shared the goal-keeping duties in the match and was thrilled that her side have progressed through to the third round which she said was ‘no mean feat’.

‘Going into the game we were missing some senior players but we were still very confident with the squad and everybody stepped up to the mark,’ added Herbert.

‘The team played some fantastic hockey; the unit play we managed to achieve and put together was first class.

We started to perform in the attacking 25, made great chances and managed to finish them off showing the improvement the side is making.’ Jersey will find out their opponents for the third round match, to be played on 21 October, this week.
