Allison retains Classic Six-hour Endurance Race title in Spain
Wednesday 3rd October 2007, 12:00AM BST.
NICK ALLISON and team-mate James Clark beat off a host of European competition to repeat their feat of last year and win the Classic Six Hour Endurance Race at the Cartagena circuit, Spain, at the weekend.
Competing for Team Glam, Clark – the team owner – experienced the Le Mans style start from fifth on the grid, where they had qualified, and handed over to Island resident Allison after three hours at around 8 pm.
Allison then completed the second stint on the Kawasaki 1145 cc bike and crossed the line in the dark of the night to top the podium.
‘It was another big international entry for this year’s event, with riders competing from all over Europe, so we are both over the moon with our win,’ said Allison.
‘It makes up for not finishing the races at both the Magny Cours, France, and Spa, Belgium, circuits earlier this year due to mechanical problems.
‘The 3.5 km circuit is very physical and there is hardly any time to take a breath and stretch the aching muscles during the race.
I have taken the skin off the insides of both my hands and toes with many gear changes done over the laps during my three hours, but in the end all our efforts were worth it.’ Prior to this race, Allison competed in the seventh round of the KTM 990 duke challenge at Cadwell Park, Lincolnshire, which is a support race for the British Superbike championship.
On a hired bike he had only ridden for one day, Allison, supported by Bikers Jersey and XMile, missed out on the top ten finish he was hoping for after having a difficult time with the set up.
But he wasn’t far off and finishing 12th in front of tens of thousands of people he said: ‘It was a tough, fraught, frantic race but felt very special in front of such a large crowd.’
