Clash likely over GST charging

POLITICIANS and businesses still look likely to clash over GST price-marking.

A survey of 111 companies by the Chamber of Commerce has shown that they favour a single 3% addition at the till instead of on items on the shelf by a three-to-one margin. They also overwhelmingly expect a negative effect on their businesses. But Economic Development Minister Philip Ozouf is expected to relodge his proposition for the 3% GST to be added to every individual item on the shelf within the coming weeks. The Economic Affairs Scrutiny panel have backed the minister’s approach, but say that they will lodge an amendment to it so that shoppers get a note on their till receipts saying how much tax was charged on their purchases.
