Hants campaign starts with big rugby win at Alton

JERSEY RFC Academy opened their Hampshire U15 League Division I campaign with a hugely impressive 80-5 victory away to Alton on Sunday.
Even the half-time withdrawal of four county triallists, Aiden McGuire, Tim Kearns, Aaron Young and Richard Sinel, had little effect on the points deluge with a further 33 points being added to the 47-0 interval lead.
Eight players got themselves onto the scoreboard, with Dale Main scoring four tries, Paul Phelan three – and Cruz George kicking ten conversions.
Phelan opened the scoring and by the 15th minute Le Main had registered his hat-trick, including an assist from Sinel.
Those scores plus another driving score from Jordon Deffains and George’s conversions made it 33-0.
McGuire, then Sinel both crossed the Alton line before the break, the latter after a quick tap penalty from Scott Van Der Vliet.
Cruz George converted.
The second half started in the same vein, with Phelan’s mazy run and George’s conversion making it 54-0.
But sustained pressure from the shell-shocked home side had some reward with a unconverted try following a quick penalty.
Le Main then took it to 59-5 following good work from Van Der Vliet and Deffains.
George continued to convert like clockwork.
Van Der Vliet then got in the act, followed by Phelan’s hat-trick try.
The final act of a runaway victory was completed when Jaime Kenyon crossed the try line.
Ashburton professional coach Barry George commented after the game: ‘A pleasing performance with some solid rucking up front and finished with smooth hands from elusive backs.
