States vote for total ban on cigarettes…

THE States have decided on an outright ban on smoking in Jersey.

But before smokers head for the ports, this States sitting was an unusual one because the politicians making the radical decision were Year 5 pupils from St Lawrence School. The students became the pioneers for the new primary school’s Citizenship Programme by holding their own debate in the States Chamber. As part of the programme, all nine- and ten-year-olds will carry out a States visit during this school year. The scheme follows a successful pilot involving d’Auvergne School in the summer term.
