Royal Jersey ready for third title attempt

Friday 5th October 2007, 12:00AM BST.

ROYAL Jersey Golf Club bid to win the Hampshire 7-a-side golf title for the third time on Sunday.

The Channel Islands Sevens champions reached the last four after a 6 1/2 points to a half win against South Winchester in August at Grouville and club secretary Darren Attwood sees no reason why the Royal players can not lift the title again.

‘We had a big win against Royal Winchester and I’m confident we can do as well again this weekend,’ said Attwood.

‘They are playing at the South Winchester course, it is nearly 7,200 yards long and with several long hitters in our team I fancy us to do well again.

‘We have a narrow course at Royal Jersey and I’m sure that will stand us in good stead.

Gavin O’Neil, Christy McLaughlin and Paul Le Chevalier play matches away regularly so that experience will be good for the team.’ Royal Jersey face Gosport and Stokes Bay on Sunday morning with the winners opposing either Southsea or Rowlands Castle in the final in the afternoon.

Royal team captain Guy Gothard will choose his side from eight players, O’Neill, McLaughlin, Le Chevalier, Robbie Messervy, Matthew Vincent, Steve Bowen, Stephen Rafferty and Alex Guelpa.
