Rugby:Front five to the fore

Friday 5th October 2007, 12:00AM BST.

AS Jersey RFC, top of London South Division II, face an away task at Maidstone tomorrow, director of coaching Dai Burton reminds the players how close previous encounters have been – including a scrambled win away from home last year.

Their strength lies in their front five and they’ve only lost one match this season, winning three.

They’re strong scrummagers, so will test ours considerably.

But I think that our two new players have already made a difference this season and ‘V’ has been a major influence in our pack.

‘Last Saturday he was outstanding.

But even last week, at home to Beckenham (which Jersey won 69-8) we only played well for 50 minutes out of 80.

We’ve got to learn to finish a game off; to blast them away for the first 40 minutes and then maintain it.’ Ashburton coach Barry George feels the same way, but Burton applauds the Kiwi not just for the work he puts in with the 1st XV, but at all levels of Island rugby.

The only change from last week’s team is at full-back, where Mark Le Mottée comes in for Steve O’Brien, on wedding duty in Ireland.

Collins Stewart squad: Marcus Nobes, Josh Chamier, Jon Brennan, Ian Henderson, Talite Vaioleti, Latu Maka’afi, Kern Yates, Graham Bell, James Cooper, Jon Swift, Ryan Morgan, Keiaho Bloomfield, Sam Tuia, Richard Stevens, Mark Le Mottée.

Replacements: Peter O’Connor, James, Brimelow, John Allo, Rory Steel.
