Guingamp struggling to find a game in Jersey

Tuesday 9th October 2007, 12:00AM BST.

FRENCH Ligue 2 club Guingamp are in Jersey on four-day training camp but are unlikely to play a game …

because there is no floodlit pitch available tonight.

Guingamp can only play a match today because French League rules state they can not play games 48 hours before a league match and they have one on Friday evening.

With Springfield and Les Quennevais in use tonight it appears unlikely that a match will be arranged against the Brittany visitors who played against Jersey a few seasons ago, while the club were a Lique 1 club playing Uefa Cup football.

It appears there has been a total lack of communication on this issue between the Jersey Football Association and the Coca-Cola Combination and that Jersey’s footballers will miss out on playing against players of a high standard.

Coca-Cola Combination president Tim Darwin said: ‘There has been a lack of communication on this issue all round – a team has been brought over and nobody has told anyone about it happening until very late.

‘I am not willing to move the Scottish and Rozel Rovers game because of the furore over that fixture already and we gave the JFA the option to move the Willis Cup game at Les Quennevais yesterday but they only came back this morning and that, I believe, is too late to inform the clubs.

‘I was led to believe Guingamp’s visit was only going to be a training break but now they would like a game.

‘Whatever I do here I can’t win, so I’m going to support the people I work with – meaning the Division I game will go ahead at Springfield.’ JFA vice-president Iain Mackenzie said: ‘It’s been a hastily arranged visit because Guingamp were not due to come this week.

‘However, they sacked their manager last midweek resulting in them changing their minds to visit and come for a bit of team bonding.

‘I looked in the fixture book and Springfield was not being used so I did not envisage any problems until I found out that the Division I match had been rearranged.’ St Ouen FC are the only club in Island that has floodlights which enable night matches to be played.
