British tennis duo poised to meet in semi-final
Friday 12th October 2007, 12:00AM BST.
THE top four seeds in the Caversham International ladies’ $25,000 tennis tournament all broke through to the quarter-finals with ease yesterday.
Top seed Katie O’Brien and fellow Brit Naomi Cavaday, the No 3 seed, are both through and on course to meet in the semi final at Les Ormes.
O’Brien beat Melanie South (GBR) 7-5, 6-2, and now faces Lucie Hradecka (CZE) while Cavaday, who beat America’s Brittany Augustine 6-1, 6-1, takes on Germany’s Sabine Lisicki.
Angelika Bachmann put out Britain’s Anna Smith 6-1, 6-3, and now faces qualifier Petra Martic (CRO), whose good form continued with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Russia’s Nina Bratchikova.
Poland’s Joanna Sakowicz, world ranked 358, continues to see off higher ranked players, beating Andrea Hlavackova (CZE) 6-4, 6-0 to set up a clash with No 4 seed Julie Coin of France (world ranked 201).
The quarter-finals of the ladies’ doubles will also be played today and there remains British interest as O’Brien and Georgie Stoop face Cavaday and Smith.
Melanie South (GBR), paired with Emma Laine (FIN), the No 2 seeds, take on Angelika Bachmann and Anastasija Sevastova.
However, Britain’s last contenders in the Men’s $15,000 Caversham International were knocked out with Miles Kasiri dismissed by the No 6 seed Frederick Nielson 6-1, 6-4, and qualifier Ken Skupski’s promising run ended by Ladislav Chramosta (CZE) 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-4.
Nielson, world ranked 461, and Chramosta (ranked 574) now battle it out for a place in the final.
Poland’s Dawid Ilejniczak, the No 4 seed, battled through a tough quarter-final against the No 8 Jeroen Masson to win 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
He now faces Massimo Dell’Acqua of Italy whose opponent Yannick Mertens retired after six games with painful ankle ligament damage forcing him to hospital.
There will definitely be a British pair in the men’s doubles final as top seeds Neil Bamford and Tom Rushby of Britain were given a walkover in their quarter-final match.
They face fellow Brits David Brewer and Ian Flanagan who put out the fourth seeds Stefano Ianni and Massimo Dell’Acqua with a 6-1, 6-2 win.
In the other semi final, Britain’s Joshua Goodall and Ken Skupski, No 2 seeds, take on the No 3 pair Raphael Durek and Dawid Olejniczak.
Singles matches start at 11 am on courts two, three and four, and will be followed with doubles matches.
