Golf:Royal trio in hunt for national glory

Wednesday 17th October 2007, 12:00AM BST.

ROYAL JERSEY Golf Club juniors are representing Hampshire this weekend in the All England County Finals at Spalding GC in Lincolnshire.

The Royal, who won the Hampshire’s Greenjackets knock-out competition earlier this year, will be represented by Sam Crenan, Nick House and Will Taylor, who play off two, five and four handicaps respectively.

It is the first time a Jersey club has been invited to represent the County in the All England competition and the teenagers are looking forward to the experience.

Team manager Peter Crenan said: ‘The juniors have had a very good season already and if they can win this it would certainly be the icing on the cake.

‘It will be tough though because they will be playing the Stableford format while their Greenjackets success was in Matchplay.

‘But they are young; they go to every competition fancying themselves to win and if they perform on both days then they will have a chance.

‘The certainly have a chance, they are all very capable of scoring below par and although Stableford slightly favours the higher handicappers, the higher players are now as consistent in the games as the lower handicappers so you never know.’ The Royal Jersey trio, who if successful would go on to play in the European final in Greece next month, will play as a team of three with their best two rounds to count each day.
