Football:Home-tie carrot as Junior Island bid for last 16
Friday 19th October 2007, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY’S under-18 footballers bid to win a place in the last 16 of the FA County Youth Cup this weekend.
Still bubbling from their 3-2 success against Cornwall at Springfield just under two weeks ago, the home team’s players have the added incentive of another home tie against Northamptonshire or London – if they are successful against Bedfordshire at Springfield tomorrow afternoon.
‘We’re expecting another tough and physical challenge,’ said Jersey boss Dave Walsh.
‘Games against English counties are always extremely challenging and this is one of the reasons we enter the competition to give our players tests against stronger teams.
‘I know it’s a different team this year but Bedfordshire were finalists in the competition two years ago.
‘We’re a young and talented side and we have players who learn quickly.
We made mistakes in the last game and we were punished for doing so.
‘We’ve been working hard to rectify matters on the training ground and hopefully there will be no repeat on Saturday.
‘We showed great character to come from behind to beat Cornwall in the last round; the players have confidence in their ability and I have confidence in their ability as a team.
‘We have one change from the last squad, Alex Gee misses out because of a suspension and he is replaced by Mark Chipperfield who last time was away watching the Rugby World Cup.’ Squad members Aaron Quaeck (St Brelade) and Kyle Riddell (Jersey Wanderers) miss out again due to injuries.
Kick-off at Springfield on Saturday is at 2.30 pm.
Jersey squad: Max Jouan, John Borg, Sam de la Haye, Jordan McBride, Jay Reid, Tim Cupit and Chris Mourant (all Jersey Wanderers); Daniel Gillett (Rozel Rovers); Seb Poole, Liam Walker, Adam Le Cornu, James Murray (St Brelade); Mark Chipperfield, Fabio Santos (First Tower); Michael Weir, Jack Boyle, Calum Brennan (Jersey Scottish) and Declan Sowney (St Paul’s).
