Rugby:Now start again…

Friday 19th October 2007, 12:00AM BST.

JERSEY RFC coach Barry George, is satisfied with what he describes as ‘the first quarter of the season’.

Yes, things have gone the way we wanted them to.

We won our first five games and, hopefully, will come back refreshed after a rest week last Saturday.

‘I’ve never seen Sidcup before, but I’ve been on their website.

They seem to have an old pack and some very young backs, which is unusual, and their fullback and kicker is also their captain.’ Compared to Jersey’s 100 per cent record, Sidcup – third from bottom having won only one game this season – might prove to be a harder nut to crack on their home turf than at St Peter, for their actual points difference is only -2, despite their position in the table, and 34 points from the 118 they have conceded came two weeks ago against Beckenham.

In other words, their defence seems better than their attack.

‘But I’m confident in the players I have,’ said George, the club’s Ashburton professional coach: ‘And unlike the rest of the teams we’ve been playing, it’s a pretty settled side.

I’ve noticed one or two of the other teams keep making big changes each week.

We’ve been lucky that we’ve a pretty consistent side.’ Former captain Steve O’Brien is the only change from two weeks ago as he takes over from Mark Le Mottée at full-back, while Jim Milner is preferred to both Le Mottée and Rory Steel on the bench.

As for Sidcup? George sees them only as the first part of his next four-part ambition.

‘The season really breaks down to four quarters, and the first is now over,’ he said.

‘We enjoyed some light training last week.

Now, we’ll start the second quarter refreshed – and ready to rip back into it.’ Collins-Stewart squad: Ryan Morgan, Sam Tuia, Keiaho Bloomfield, Richard Stevens, Jon Swift, James Cooper, Marcus Nobes, Josh Chamier, Jon Brennan, Ian Henderson, Talite Vaioleti, Latu Maka’afi, Graham Bell, Kern Yates.

Replacements: James Brimelow, Peter O’Connor, John Allo, James Milner.
