Football:U18s suffer cup KO

Monday 22nd October 2007, 12:00AM BST.

JERSEY’S hopes of a third home tie in the FA County Youth Cup were ended at Springfield on Saturday afternoon.

A 2-1 defeat after extra-time was a bitter blow for the hosts who gave as good as they got in an even game in which both team’s had good opportunities.

Bedfordshire took the lead with a fine low drive in the 69th minute before Jersey defender Mark Chipperfield nodded home an equaliser five minutes from the end to force extra time.

But just 20 seconds into the first extra period Jersey were caught napping and substitute Jamie Warne raced onto a pass before scoring across the face of goal from 12 yards.

Jersey fought hard to score again but skipper Jack Boyle was denied by a good save and had a shot blocked while Bedfordshire almost extended their lead when substitute Robert Newman rattled a post.

Jersey manager Dave Walsh said: ‘It’s disappointing to go out, we matched a strong and quick side and I think we played the better football but we could not finish our chances.

‘I cannot fault the effort and commitment of my players, it was not as if they were not trying because their work rate was superb.

‘Liam Walker did well at full back but collectively it was a good effort from everyone.’
