Football:Springfield showdown

Tuesday 23rd October 2007, 12:00AM BST.

CHAMPIONS Jersey Scottish and title challengers St Paul’s meet at Springfield tonight with top spot in the Coca-Cola Combination Division I at stake.

With in-form and undefeated Trinity moving a point clear on Saturday following their victory against the Portuguese Club, the other remaining undefeated sides meet with the prospect of a good game and a new face turning out for each club.

St Paul’s have signed Muratti midfielder Liam Walshe from Grouville, he scored 22 goals last season, while Scottish have included newcomer Alex Snow, a tall centre half who left the professional game after breaking a leg.

The Saints suffered a set back last Saturday with a 1-0 Jeremie Cup defeat by St Martin’s in Guernsey, but manager Craig Culkin is not worried.

‘It was one of those games in Guernsey,’ said Culkin.

‘We missed a bagful of chances and got punished after one of our players slipped and they netted their goal.

‘It was our best performance of the season without scoring.

I’m full of confidence for tonight, we’ll be looking to have a go at Scottish because we want their title.

‘We’ve come a long way since last season.

Defensively we are playing much better, we have been keeping a lot of clean sheets and the boys have been working very hard when we don’t have the ball.

‘Liam Walshe is a fantastic signing for us, we are shortly to lose Jordan Docherty as he is going away and Liam will slot in nicely.

He has quality in abundance and he knows where the goal is.’ Walshe (26), who played in all of Jersey’s games in the Island Games in Rhodes in the summer, said: ‘I’ve moved because I wanted a fresh challenge.

Things had gone a little stale for me at Grouville so I felt it was time to move on.’ Scottish boss Pat Brennan said: ‘It’s a big three points and whoever wins them may well go on to win the league.

Yes there is a long way to go and to be successful you have to beat your challengers.

‘St Paul’s have had a very good start, they have lots of good players and they are strong throughout.

‘Alex Snow will start on the bench, I’ve not seen him play yet but at training he looks very good technically.

He had a bad injury which is why he packed up playing professionally but he has returned well because two seasons ago he played in the FA Vase final for his previous non-league club.’ Scottish welcome back former Muratti winger Ali Santos, he scored a hat-trick for the Reserves on Saturday, while two others return from suspension.

Kick-off is at 7.30 pm.
