Lifeguards’ prompt action saves man’s life
Saturday 27th October 2007, 12:00AM BST.
TWO lifeguards at Les Quennevais sports centre saved the life of a 62-year-old man earlier this week.
The man, Tony Renouf, collapsed while exercising on a treadmill in the gym and Rob Hamon (26) and Simon Abels (33) revived him after he suffered a heart attack. Mr Renouf is recovering in hospital and has thanked the two men as well as senior paramedic John Sutherland for helping to bring him back to life. They used a defibrillator supplied by the St John Ambulance service to revive Mr Renouf. Mr Hamon said: ‘I was sitting at the gym desk at about 7.30 am on Monday when I heard a big crash. I saw the customers run to the corner of the gym. The guy was lying between the treadmills and exercise bikes and was not moving. There was blood around the corner of his head. ‘His breathing was heavy, so I put him in the recovery position. I checked for a pulse but there was none,’ he said. By this time Mr Abels was on the scene and he administered oxygen to Mr Renouf while Mr Hamon got the defibrillator. When they had the oxygen and defibrillator on him, the defibrillator advised that an electric shock be administered.
