Pacy Saints gallop into Willis finale

Wednesday 31st October 2007, 12:00AM GMT.

ST OUEN continued their impressive winning run last night to reach the Willis Memorial Trophy final.

The Coca-Cola Combination Division II leaders defeated Division I Reserves leaders St Paul’s 5-1 at Les Quennevais to record their nine consecutive victory in all competitions and 11th in 12 games this season.

St Ouen will now face either St Brelade or Sporting Academics in the final at Springfield on Tuesday 11 December.

Lucas Parker, Shane Carré, Jack Crawford, Rob Sanford and Jon Evans netted for St Ouen, with junior Island striker Declan Sowney replying for St Paul’s.

St Ouen joint-manager Peter Flambard said: ‘It was not as comfortable as the score line suggests, St Paul’s had a lot of possession first half and we hit them with three goals on the break – two on the stroke of half time.

‘They did pull a goal back early in the second half but once we got our fourth midway through the game was over.

‘Our pace hurt them, we knew they played three at the back so we brought in Shane Carré as he has good pace and it worked to good effect.

‘We’ve had an excellent start to the season and it’s down to the hard pre-season we had and the commitment of the players.

We’ve got two squads regularly training twice a week and although we are not playing brilliantly, we are sharper and more committed than many of our opponents.’ St Paul’s player-manager Dave Alexander said: ‘We had a lot of possession and played some good football but we lacked a finishing touch.

‘St Ouen had a lot of pace and they knocked a lot of balls over the top of our defence and that’s where they hurt us.’ St Paul’s Res: Dave Alexander; Carl Hayes, Matt Hibbs, Jay Cassidy, Paul Singh, James Hibbs, Dave Watson, Paul McGinness, Robbie Whittaker, Glen Durrans, Declan Sowney.
