Prison budget goes up by £1m

Friday 30th November 2007, 12:00AM GMT.

THE Council of Ministers have agreed to increase the prison budget by an additional £1m a year.

This move will enable the employment of more prison officers, teachers and drugs counsellors.

This sum is in addition to the annual £500,000 which the council sanctioned two weeks ago for the Prison Improvement Plan.

The extra ฃ1.5m annually will take the 2008 prison budget to ฃ9.3m if agreed by the States.

Home Affairs Minister Wendy Kinnard said the news was a source of great relief and she was delighted that the Council of Ministers had supported her view that the prison was seriously underfunded.
