Jersey child abuse claims backed by cellar discoveries

Monday 3rd March 2008, 12:00AM GMT.

PICTURES of the bricked-up cellar at the centre of the Haut de la Garenne child abuse inquiry have been released.

The images show a stone bath, which police say corroborates reports from alleged victims, and graffiti on the walls.

Excavation work at the site will resume today after skull fragments and a set of shackles were found last week.

However Deputy police chief Lenny Harper said that it would not be known for at least another three weeks whether or not those remains were relevant to the child abuse investigation.

He said: ‘It may well be that those remains are historical, and have been there for many, many years. It’s also a distinct possibility that the person didn’t die unlawfully. The truth of the matter is we just don’t know.’

Search teams have also been removing top soil from the field behind the home were members of the public had reported finding bones.

More bones were uncovered at the site on Saturday, but Mr Harper said he was convinced that they were not human. ‘The bones are still in the ground, although we are satisfied that they are not human. They are animal bones,’ he said.
