Early census ‘is unnecessary’

THE Council of Ministers will fight plans to bring forward Jersey’s 2011 census.

They agreed yesterday to reject two propositions that would force the States to hold a census before they rezone any more land in the countryside for development.

They said that information about housing need would be available this year when the Housing Department published the results of its survey of 10,000 households, carried out in late 2007.

Deputy Carolyn Labey lodged two propositions last month, the first of which calls for the census to be brought forward.

The second calls for ministers to abandon plans for 450 homes for the elderly and first-time buyers in the countryside until the Island Plan review is finished.
