Minister is adamant on rear seatbelts

TRANSPORT Minister Guy de Faye still believes that rear seatbelts should be a matter of choice, even though his own department has come out in favour of changing the law.

In time for the States debate next week, the Transport and Technical Services department has published a report giving its backing to changing the law. And yesterday the Council of Ministers also said it would be supporting Deputy Paul Le Claire’s proposition to make it law to wear a seatbelt in the back of a car.

But Deputy de Faye is standing firm. He

believes that wearing a rear seatbelt is a matter of choice with the exception of children under the age of 14.

Transport and Technical Services have produced evidence for the States which proves that belting up in the back reduces injuries in traffic accidents.
