Ex-police ‘tried to smear abuse inquiry officers’
Monday 10th March 2008, 12:00AM GMT.
FORMER police officers have tried to hamper the Haut de la Garenne inquiry by attempting to discredit and smear the leading officers involved, say the current investigating team.
Police confirmed this morning that at least one former police officer had approached a States Member and the national media in an attempt to smear the officers leading the current investigation.
The statement follows stories in the Sunday Times and other national newspapers over the weekend.
It is not clear whether the approach was made before the discovery of the partial remains of a child at the former children’s home – but the police say the former officer(s) ‘had left the force in various circumstances after being accused of activities which could be described as corrupt’.
