Rights group calls for anonymity for defendants in cases of sexual abuse

DEFENDANTS in cases of alleged sexual abuse should remain anonymous until convicted, the Jersey Rights Association has said.
In a statement issued by the group as the Haut de la Garenne child abuse inquiry continues, it makes clear that it shares the general public’s outrage and dismay over the unfolding scandal.
Grave injustice
However, chairman David Rotherham said that the case has illustrated a potential for grave injustice.
‘The accused in cases of sexual abuse are named in Jersey before the outcome of the trial and even acquittal from a false accusation is likely to leave a lasting stain on the accused’s reputation,’ he said.
