Cup run prepares Jersey footballers for Star test

JERSEY bid to win the under-15 schooboys’ Star Trophy silverware outright tomorrow lunch time after the teams shared six goals with Guernsey away last year.

A 1 pm kick off at Springfield should draw a good crowd and the Jersey boys certainly deserve support having just come off the back of their best ever run in the Inter-Association Trophy where they were finally beaten in the quarter-finals.

But that competition is history and now it’s back to the highlight of Channel Islands schoolboy football – the annual match against their Sarnian counterparts, who will no doubt be itching to get a win over their rivals.

Craig Northedge, who coaches Jersey along with Russell Le Feuvre, said: ‘This year’s phenomenal run in the English schoolboys’ cup has given our boys a lot of opportunities to play against some technical and physically strong sides.

‘We are very aware and have no doubt that Guernsey will be relishing the opportunity to beat a Jersey side that reached the quarter-finals of a National cup competition.

‘We look forward to their challenge and I’m sure that the game will be a hard fought contest as it is most years.

‘We have trained hard as a squad since last September and the players’ commitment on and off the pitch has been outstanding throughout.

‘Russell and I are extremely proud of what they have achieved and it has been a delight to see them develop as individual players and more importantly, as a team.

‘Our boys are all positive and up for the game. They are fully prepared to give Guernsey a strong and physical game it as it’s coming to the end of our time together we all want to finish off with a win.’
