Extra £1.2m needed to fight pandemic flu

THE Island needs to spend an extra £1.2 million to bolster its defences against pandemic flu, says the Medical Officer of Health.
Speaking on behalf of the pandemic flu steering group which has reviewed what preparations need to be made, Dr Rosemary Geller has revealed that the money would pay for extra vaccines, antibiotics and protective clothing for health staff.
She stressed that the Island needed to stockpile now because it would probably lose out in the race for available drugs once a world flu pandemic was announced.
