Move to end historic ban on cattle semen imports

Friday 14th March 2008, 12:00AM GMT.

JERSEY cows could be bred with imported cattle semen for the first time in the Island’s history.

The Chief Minister lodged a draft law yesterday which, if approved, would allow bull semen from other countries to be used in the breeding of the world-famous cow.

The issue has divided opinion among farmers for nearly 40 years. Farmers in support of the importation argue that access to prized bulls from all over the world will improve their herds, providing more milk and healthier animals.

Opponents say that it will ruin the purity and appearance of the

Island’s breed.
