Guernsey hit for six
Monday 17th March 2008, 12:00AM GMT.
THE Island’s A-team not only beat Guernsey in the netball inter-insular at Fort Regent yesterday afternoon, but their 48-22 win was one for the record books.
If that wasn’t the biggest winning margin, ever, I’d like to know when an A-team inter-insular was so one-sided,’ coach Ally Meredith said afterwards.
‘Use all of the superlatives you like. Every player was awesome. Everyone played to the peak of their game. And this isn’t to take anything away from the Guernsey team. They’re very good. But from the opening quarter Jersey were dominant and remained so until the end.
‘Playing in the South-West Premier League has made a difference. We’ve three weekends left at national level but, after this win I’ve told them they can have the next weekend off. I can’t stress how dominant they were and how pleased I was for goalkeeper Sharon West to be named as player of the game by the judging panel of the assistant umpires. But she wasn’t alone in the way she played. The whole team played so incredibly well.
‘In front of a 250-plus crowd we were four or five goals ahead at the end of the first quarter.
‘That hasn’t happened in any one game we’ve played this season, for early on in any competition both teams are usually cautious in working out the standard of the opposition.
‘At half-time I think we were 11 points ahead; then 15 goals ahead, going into the last quarter. To be quite honest, at no stage of the game were we behind and we never looked like losing.’
Results, Jersey wins unless stated otherwise: Open A: 48-22; Open B: 54-32; Over 35s (a win for Guernsey, 45-20); Under-12: 25-9; Under-14: 22-14; Under-16s: 50-37; Under-19s: 41-32.
