St Paul’s need four points from two games to win Marquis trophy
Monday 17th March 2008, 12:00AM GMT.
A WIN and a draw from their remaining two matches, against relegated First Tower and St Peter, and St Paul’s will win the James Marquis Memorial Division I title for the first time since 2000.
St Paul’s kept on track while ending St Peter’s title aspirations by beating them 4-1 at St Peter on Saturday. Craig Leitch notched a brace and Nathan Taylor and Mark Lucas singles before the hosts grabbed a late consolation through Marcus Bailey.
Trinity, the only team who can now possibly overhaul St Paul’s’ points total, remain six points behind the leaders with a game in hand as a result of their home match against Grouville being postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
Meanwhile Rozel Rovers and Jersey Wanderers secured Division I football next season after they both won; Rozel 3-2 at Le Couvent against relegation threatened Portuguese Club and Wanderers 4-0 at the Hockey Club against relegated First Tower United.
Portuguese are now in deep trouble in the second relegation place, a point behind Grouville, and they must beat title-chasing Trinity in their final game to give then any chance of staying up ahead of Grouville who also have Trinity to play along with the now safe Rozel.
Darran De Sousa, James O’Haire and Scott Healey were on target for Rozel at Le Couvent while Wanderers netted at the Hockey Club through David Kenyon (two), Karl Sutton and Stevie Reid.
Wanderers were many peoples’ favourites to go just a few months back but they have turned matters around superbly and Saturday’s victory was their fourth in five games to retain their top flight status.
Touzel Cup finalists St Lawrence recorded the result of the day winning 2-1 away to Division II title challengers St Ouen after goals by Paul McMahon and Tom Seal.
Despite their loss St Ouen won promotion back to Division I as a result of Beeches Old Boys being beaten – 3-2 by Magpies at Les Quennevais where the ‘Pies scored two goals in the final two minutes.
Ian Doyle and John Donald were on the mark for Beeches and Mark Le Marinel, Adam Gallagher and Paul Duffy for the Magpies.
Divisional leaders Sporting Academics also slipped up following a 2-2 draw against Jersey Nomads at the IJ Bathe Field where Paul Starkey and Paul Lees netted for Nomads.
St Brelade won a seven-goal thriller by the odd goal at home to St Clement. Ollie Nightingale (two), Liam Walker and Adam Russell, from 35 yards, were on target for the hosts and Mark Anderson, Beau Waugh and Matt Scriven for the visitors.
Sean Ganly hit a hat-trick in St John’s 6-2 home win against St Martin/SCF. Luke Bichard, Kieran Walker and Ged Horgan also netted for the winners and Paul Devenish and Jimmy Caldwell for the losers.
St Clement won promotion from Division II Reserves after they slammed bottom-team St Lawrence 12-1 at St Clement. Matt Rawlings scored four times while Paul Andrews and Wayne Shales notched hat-tricks and John Tuck and Scott Mackie singles.
Magpies recorded their third win of the season, 4-2 at the Airport against St Martin/SCF. It was doubles all round as Michael Martini and Jamie Bower scored a brace apiece for the winners with Jordan Hawkins replying with a pair.
The only game played in Division C resulted in Sporting Academics slipping to their 14th straight league defeat, 5-3 at the IJ Bathe Field where Rozel Rovers’ marksmen were Craig Robbins (two), Lee Kent, Eric Couasnon and Joe Gouedart.
