Isles to compete in ladies’ tournament
Thursday 20th March 2008, 12:00AM GMT.
JERSEY’S women footballers are to play in a three-team UK Offshore Island end-of-season tournament in Jersey.
Island Games regulars the Isle of Man and the Isle of Wight will visit over the weekend of 16-18 May playing in a round-robin tournament.
The visitors will kick-off the event against each other at the IJ Bathe Field on the Friday evening starting at 6 o’clock.
Jersey will play the Isle of Man the following day at Springfield, kick-off at 2 pm, with the Isle of Wight and Jersey completing the tournament at Springfield on the Sunday starting at midday.
It is hoped that the tournament will rotate between the islands every two years.
Jersey Football Association president Ricky Weir said: ‘Contacts were made with women’s and men’s teams at the last Island Games in Rhodes and this is the result.
‘We are continuing to improve our games opportunities for all teams; the visiting islands I’m sure will provide excellent opposition for us together with helping develop our players further.’
Jersey women’s team manager Tony Hoyland said: ‘Development matches and tournaments such as this are paramount to our continuing development as a women’s Island team.
‘I hope it will become a bi-annual event between the Island Games as the more representative matches we can play the higher we can raise the standard and profile of women’s football in Jersey.’
The tournament is being supported by the JFA’s main sponsor the Wilde Family Office Limited, together with Flybe and the Merton Hotel.
