Wanderers complete U18 football double
Saturday 22nd March 2008, 12:00AM GMT.
STRIKER Barry Keith scored the only goal at Springfield on Thursday night to help Jersey Wanderers retain the Tregear Cup against St Paul’s.
Keith, who was lively throughout, capitalised on a mistake in the Saints’ defence to score from 12 yards minutes into the second half.
Wanderers, who completed an under-18 Division I league and cup double, did not have it all their own way, however, as St Paul’s had the better of the chances in the first half as Nick Holmes struck a crossbar and Declan Sowney was denied by a fine blocking save from goalkeeper Max Jouan.
Wanderers’ best opportunity came minutes before the interval but an effort was cleared off a goal-line.
Both sides worked hard to keep the ball down in blustery conditions. It was even throughout in midfield while Wanderers’ back line of Michael Woods, John Borg, Sam de la Haye and Jordan McBride worked well as a unit in the second period restricting St Paul’s to little in attack.
With St Paul’s chasing the game late on Wanderers took advantage of space they were afforded but they too were foiled by two fine saves by St Paul’s stopper Peter Osmont, both from Alex Gee.
St Paul’s almost grabbed a late equaliser but Joe Goaziou’s shot from the left drifted narrowly wide.
