LE Rocquier School’s Danielle Leerson continued her outstanding form to win a team gold medal for Hampshire in the UK inter-counties cross country championships and world trials.
Just a week after finishing a brilliant 16th, out of 335 runners, in the English Schools championship in Liverpool, Leerson(far right in the picture) placed eighth out of 300 runners in the under-13 girls’ race to be a major contributor in bringing home gold for Hampshire.
Six Jersey athletes represented the County at Woolaton Park in Nottingham, the elite event including the World cross country trials with many internationals taking part. The full series of races were televised by Sky television with several of the Jersey athletes featuring.
Felicity Johnson-Deeley, of the Jersey College for Girls, ran in the under-15 girls’ race where confusion reigned when an obvious false start was not called back resulting in many teams hesitating coming out of their start pens.
Deeley, and her team-mates, had a bad start but from near to the back of field she clawed her way back to finish 57th out of 274 starters.
Oliver Terry, in his first major championship, performed excellently to placed 122 out of 298 in the U13 boys.
Toby Edwards was 92nd out of 195 in the U20s while U15 boys Elliott Dorey and Wade Le Marquand placed 94th and 136th respectively.
