Pensioner escapes chip pan fire

Thursday 27th March 2008, 12:00AM GMT.

A PENSIONER had a lucky escape yesterday when a pan of hot oil sparked a blaze in her kitchen.

The woman and her carer, who live at Keith Baal Gardens, managed to smother the flames with wet towels after leaving a chip pan on the hob after cooking breakfast.

The incident has prompted Jersey Fire and Rescue to warn about the dangers of chip pans, and urge Islanders to buy deep fat fryers instead.

Fire station manager Marc Le Cornu said: ‘Yet again the dreaded chip pan has claimed another kitchen. Please get rid of your traditional chip pans and replace them with a thermostatically controlled deep fat fryer, they are so much safer.’
