£20 million artificial reef plan for St Aubin’s Bay
Tuesday 1st April 2008, 12:00AM BST.
A £20 million artificial reef in St Aubin’s Bay could be the solution to Jersey’s crumbling sea defences.
Transport and Technical Services Minister Guy de Faye wants to pile rocks on the beach inbetween Elizabeth Castle and St Aubin’s Fort, creating at the same time a world-class surf break in the bay.
He says that as well as creating good surf all year round, the reef will prevent waves crashing against the sea wall.
The proposal, published today, is one of a number of recommendations in a report by New Zealand consultants Shamen Sea Solutions, who have been brought to the Island to look at the Island’s sea defences.
Shamen, who are being paid £240,000 for their report, also recommend the banning of sandcastles and bait-digging on Jersey beaches, claiming that the displacement of sand is damaging the sea walls.
