Bermuda boost, while Aland expect record numbers for Games
Tuesday 1st April 2008, 12:00AM BST.
THE Island Games Association Executive Committee has announced that it will recommend Bermuda to be the host of the 2013 NatWest Island Games.
Following a meeting in the Isle of Wight, the 2011 hosts, the Executive decided to recommend Bermuda over Prince Edward Island. However, the final decision will be taken by the voting membership at the IGA agm in Aland on 28 June.
The Executive’s recommendation is no guarantee of an Island being chosen as the islands overturned the committee’s recommendations for the venue of the 2009 Games, choosing Aland ahead of the Isle of Wight. Irrespective of who is chosen it will be the first time the event has been held on the other side of the Atlantic.
At the meeting a report on the progress and preparations for the Aland Games was presented and it was suggested that the number of sportspeople, including managers and officials, could reach 3700.
It was also confirmed that NatWest has recently extended its sponsorship agreement with the IGA for a further two years, guaranteeing support of the Games until after the Isle of Wight competition.
