Don’t build in countryside before a full review of homes, urges Deputy

Tuesday 1st April 2008, 12:00AM BST.

A FULL planning and homes review should take place before the States make an irrevocable decision to build more homes in the countryside, says Deputy Carolyn Labey.

She says that countryside fields should be rezoned only after the Island Plan Review has taken place so that the States and Islanders can be sure that giving up green fields for houses is justified.

Deputy Labey’s proposition to put off the rezoning of fields and bring forward the Island Plan Review will be debated in the States this week.

She says that plans by Housing Minister Terry Le Main and Environment Minister Freddie Cohen to rezone the fields is ‘little short of chaos’ and that they are treating the countryside ‘in a reckless and cavalier manner’.
