Speed plates ‘useless red tape’

RULES requiring truck drivers to carry rear plates showing they cannot drive faster than 30 mph have been overturned as ‘unnecessary red tape’.
Since the start of the year, drivers of heavy goods vehicles, medium goods vehicles and trailers weighing more than 3.5 tonnes have been liable to a £5,000 fine if they do not carry a ’30′ disc on the back.
But St Clement Deputy Gerard Baudains led the States to overwhelmingly overturn the law – despite protests from Transport Minister Guy de Faye – by 36 votes to three.
‘This is possibly the most useless piece of bureaucracy that I have come across, and this Island is sinking under bureaucracy,’ said Deputy Baudains.
