St Paul’s take the Dog – and football double
Wednesday 2nd April 2008, 12:00AM BST.
ST PAUL’S completed a league and cup double last night after defeating Division II Reserves leaders St Clement in the Dog Club Trophy final at Springfield.
Ollie Gallagher fired St Paul’s ahead early when he followed up a blocked shot to net from close range.
Midway through the half Paul Singh made it 2-0 when he nodded home a corner kick from the right.
Matt Rawlings scored his 54th goal of the season; he has played in first, second and third teams this season, to reduce the deficit before the interval.
Shortly afterwards Rawlings, who was a threat throughout, was denied by a good save from Island goalkeeper Andrew Bird and then St Clement’s crossbar was rattled by Robbie Whittaker.
On the hour St Paul’s captain Paul McGinness was fouled in a penalty area and under-18 Island forward Declan Sowney made it 3-1 from the resultant penalty kick.
Rawlings pulled a second back 12 minutes from the end and another fine save by Bird, from substitute Wayne Shales, prevented extra-time.
