JERSEYMAN Tom Wherry played at Fulham Football Club’s Craven Cottage last Saturday in Oxford’s 5-3 defeat by Cambridge in the annual Varsity football match.

Despite the defeat, the Old Victorian said it was a fantastic day out and the football was a curtain raiser to the Varsity Boat race held on the River Thames in London.

The 20-year-old Grouville FC utility player said: ‘It was disappointing to lose the game to a couple of late goals; it was a free flowing game with goals going in from every angle and their goalkeeper made a fantastic save to prevent us going 4-3 up.

‘Cambridge then went up the other end immediately to score themselves and pushing forward we were caught by another goal right at the end.

‘We stuck with our game plan to play football; conditions were not great and Cambridge got more joy playing with a more direct style so it was disappointing that we were beaten.

‘For players of our level to play at Craven Cottage was brilliant. We were treated like professional players on the day and we all know how very, very lucky we were to have been involved.’

Oxford came from behind three times before being beaten in possibly one of the greatest Varsity matches to date.

Matt Stock turned out to be Cambridge’s hero scoring his universities’ first four goals.
