A politician’s life: Every year, ten full days in the House

Thursday 3rd April 2008, 12:00AM BST.

THE Island’s politicians spent the equivalent of ten straight days and nights in the States Chamber last year.

The annual States report, which was published earlier this week, reveals that Members racked up an average of 240 hours and 30 minutes in the Chamber in 2007 — a figure which was up from 190 hours in 2006.

More than 140 of those hours were used to debate propositions in 2007, with 25 hours spent answering questions with notice.

Ministers also spent ten hours answering questions without notice from Members during the fortnightly 30 minutes on the floor of the house.
