De La Salle puts its best foot forward
Friday 4th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.
A MAN who has played a vital role in the organisation of the De La Salle round-the-Island walk for the past 36 years yesterday sent walkers on their way for the final time.
Senior teacher John Downey, who retires from teaching in July, has also been the school’s Island Walk chairman for around the past ten years.
Yesterday’s walk was the 47th that the secondary school has held. The money raised is still being counted but it is hoped that it will match the £18,000 raised last year.
Almost 400 boys took part in the walk and 130 managed to complete the 36-mile course. The fastest student was Year 11 pupil Sam Cartwright, who finished in six hours and eight minutes. He was closely followed by James Rondel (Year 12), Sam Ward (Year 9) and Aaron Labey (Year 10).
