Social security to pay for care of elderly?

Friday 4th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.

SOCIAL security contributions may be increased to pay for the care of Jersey’s ageing population.

However, the move would stop the elderly from having to sell their homes to pay for care.

Social Security Minister Paul Routier said that his department was considering increasing social security contributions to cover the basic costs involved in long-term residential care.

He said: ‘In Guernsey people pay social security contributions to cover part of the cost for residential care. Their scheme has been running for the last three or four years.

‘We could have a similar scheme in Jersey but the public need to be asked if this is what they want.’
